The Situation in Lesotho

SOCIO -ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL SITUATION OF LESOTHO IN BRIEF

Lesotho as a country in the global south is confronted by the challenges of the post cold war era characterised by increasing globalisation and diminishing role of the state.  The levels of poverty in Lesotho are increasingly becoming sharp given the high incidence unemployment rate resultant of among others privatisation and diminishing primary industries of economy.  The retrenchment of Basotho mine workers from the Republic of South Africa has significantly limited flow of cash directly into the villages thus affecting livelihoods negatively..

DPE's Intervention

For analysing opportunities and potential for DPE’s intervention in the political and socio-economic environment, more focus was put on looking into main challenges which are facing Lesotho as depicted in the vision 2020, Poverty Reduction Strategy, Strategies for scaling up the National response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Lesotho and the newly elected Local government councils. DPE intervenes in this way:

 1. Incapacity of the Basotho to feed themselves and destitution trap.

The first challenge discussed was incapacity of the Basotho to feed themselves. The problem is both at national, household and individual levels. An opportunity for DPE’s intervention is in contributing towards achieving the Government goal of attaining food security. Food security takes priority number one and two as illustrated under Vision 2020, the Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) as well as National Agricultural Sector Strategy in Lesotho, the Lesotho National Food Security Policy and Strategic Guidelines in particular, emphasize the importance of better food security as a development goal for Lesotho.
