Ministry of Labour and Employment in collaboration with Ministry of Health appeared before the Social
Cluster Committee. The two ministries were providing the updates on the issue of remittance of Basotho
ex-miners who were part of the people who contributed to the economy of Republic of South Africa and
its infrastructure. After a long time the Ministry of Labour and Employment not taking the matter as a
matter of urgency and importance.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment is working in partnership with the Tshiamiso Trust to ensure
that Basotho who worked in the mines, as well as the families of deceased miners receive their due
compensation. The government is committed to assisting eligible beneficiaries to secure all required
documentation.

The ministry of health stated that it is within their mandate to ensure that every Mosotho who was
exposed to mine dust receives compensation. They emphasized that compensation should not be denied
due to the lack of medical reports that beneficiaries may not have. The Ministry of Health will also assist
with post mortem processes by ensuring that organs sent to the laboratory are returned intact and that
service is provided free of charge. This will enable families to file claims for deceased relatives.

The parliamentary social cluster committee, through its chairperson, emphasized that all stakeholders
must ensure this information is disseminated to communities nationwide. This is to ensure that all
Basotho are informed and can access assistance before the Tshiamiso Trust deadline. DPE, TRC and LCN
were in attendance when Ministry of Labour and Employment showing its commitment towards Basotho
remittance recovering in Republic of South Africa.
It was in that meeting where all stakeholders were urged to intensify outreach efforts so that eligible
beneficiaries are aware of the process and receive help in time. The other things is that there are
companies which are willing to pay Basotho who worked in Republic of South Africa in the past years
under this coordination of Social Cluster Committee.
